Green schools are healthier for students and teachers, better for the environment, and cost less to operate and maintain.

Begin Students with One Simple Act

Choose environment actions that can easily fit within your school’s culture. For example, build awareness of water conservation and have students use refillable containers, adopt a school-wide zero-waste lunch program and/or turn off the lights when rooms are empty. One Simple Act has collected some tools and materials to help your school succeed on its journey to sustainability.

Elementary

One Simple Act School Toolkit. Engage students and teachers in making commitments at school with this toolkit (resource guide).
Alberta’s Be Idle-free Schools. A resource guide for teachers on how to implement an idle-free school.

Junior/Senior High

Deliver a Program. Inspire others to take action in your school or community. One Simple Act presentations and community action programs are available free to use by students, teachers or community members. Topics include: Composting; Greening Your Home; Farm to Fridge (food miles); and Be Green and Clean.

Share Your School's Success Story Many schools have joined One Simple Act and are achieving their environmental goals. Tell us your school’s story and share a picture! Selected stories may be featured online.
Celebrate your School in Community during Environment Week Share your actions and best practices within the community. Host an event like an Environment Fair, workshops on composting or gardening, have a litter pick-up or plants trees. Open the doors and involve everyone. Every action counts.
